He shared with all present that Ramanujan’s life should be an inspiration for all of us as inspite of all the impediments he worked tirelessly towards his goal of excellence in mathematics.  He highlighted that Ramanujan’s contribution  to the field of mathematics can be gauged by his contributions like Ramanujan prime, the Ramanujan theta functionpartition formulae and mock theta functions which continue to foster new research even today. He encouraged all the students to give their best and emulate the life of Ramanujan.

Dr. Manoj Kumar, Principal DAVIET stated that we should remember the great mathematician Ramanujan who worked diligently in the field of mathematics and made significant contributions without any formal training. He shared that the great mathematician independently compiled nearly 3,900 results many of which were completely novel and highly unconventional. He also shed light on the fact that his immense work was recognized at the international level as he became one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Society and only the second Indian member, and the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He highlighted that mathematics is the backbone of all engineering and all the budding technocrats should pursue it seriously. He also declared the formation of Ramanujan  Club in the college.

One of the Chief attractions was the expert talk by Dr. Arun Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Ropar on the Topic “ Probability and Statistics with Applications”.

In his talk he highlighted that probability is the formal study of uncertainty and it has two approaches namely frequentist approach and the Bayesian Approach. He also defined statistics as a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation and organization of data. He also shared that probability has applications in insurance, biostatistics, machine learning, econometrics and statistical physics.

To commemorate the memory of Ramanujan competitions in quiz, poster making, presentations and mathematical rangoli were organized.

The winners of various competitions were honored with trophies and certificates.

At the end convener of the event Dr. Rajni Sharma delivered vote of thanks to all the dignitaries present, member of faculty and staff, organizers and the students.

National Science Day Celebrated in DAVIET

1490026872623

National Science Day Celebrations were organized by Department of Applied Sciences andCentre for Excellence for Cyber Security  and Cyber Forensics  to commemorate  the life of Sir C.V Raman who is credited with the discovery of Raman Effect here at DAVIET.  The basic aim of celebrations were to give exposure to students about the latest discoveries in the field of science and to give them a platform to appreciate the great discovery by Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman on 28 February 1928. The celebrations are supported by National Council for Science & Technology Communication( NCSTC),  Department of Science and Technology( DST), Government of India and  Punjab State Council for Science & Technology ( PSCST)

Dr. Manoj Kumar, Principal DAVIET stated that we should remember the great Physicist Sir  Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman  who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his work in the field of Light Scattering . He shared that the theme of National Science Day, 2017 is “Science and Technology for Specially Abled Persons” and highlighted that it is time when benefits of science and technology should reach every individual so that no one should be left out of the phenomenal growth story of India.  He urged upon the students to be innovative while dealing with their assignments and projects so as to break newer grounds in their respective field.

Dr. Kanchan Singh, Head Department of Applied Sciences welcomed the students and teachers on National Science Day celebrations. She highlighted that the Department is committed to provide the necessary exposure to first year students so that they can become able technocrats and managers.  While giving the details of the events she shared that there will be project display, technical quiz and poster making through which the students will showcase their passion for science and technology. She shared that  an expert talk by  Dr. GS Sodhi Associate Professor, GTB Khalsa College,  New Delhi was organized on the topic  “Scientific Methods of Solving Crimes”  which will help the students gain valuable insights about the nascent field.

Dr. G. S Sodhi  in his talk discussed  about the fact that Raman Effect has wide usage in the field of Forensic Science as it is used to detect the cases of drug abuse. While talking about the field ofForensic Science he gave practical examples like that of Aarushi Murder case and  gave the message that the crime scene should never be spoilt. While giving details of the steps involved in investigating a crime , he stated that the crime scene should be cordoned off and then only efforts should be made to unearth the evidence. He classified evidence as class evidence, individual evidence and finger prints  which are the most infallible pieces of evidence. He also highlighted the types of finger prints asArches, Loops and Whorls. He also enlightened there are as many as 85 characters on a finger tip and as per the Indian  Law only 8 are required  to book a person.  He also highlighted the various methods of picking up finger prints like Powder Technique, Nin Hydrin technique, Nano Technology powder, Spray Formulations etc and gave the message that the need of the hour is to have a multi disciplinary approach to solve crime cases.A  presentation on “Legend Sir Raman “ was given by Ridhima and Amitojbir from CSE 2ndSemester.

Dr. Rajni Sharma, Convener of the Celebrations, thanked the Principal, the key note speaker and the judges for taking time out of their busy schedule  and making celebrations a success. She also thanked the faculty of Department of Applied Sciences and the students who gave their best to organize the event.
