An  Eye donation camp was organized at DAV institute of Engineering and Technology at 08/09/2016 in association with Health and family welfare department. A team of  eye specialist  naming Dr. S S Maan (SMO – Eye Mobile Unit, Jalandhar), Dr. Arun Kumar, Dr. Gurvinder kaur graced the occasion. The team of doctors were welcomed by Dr. Manoj Kumar(Principal, DAVIET), Dr. M. K Kaushik, NSS officer, Dr. Sanjeev Naval, Head Deptt.of Civil Engineering , Dr. Sonia Chawla Head, Department of Business Administration and Dr. Neeru Malhotra, Head, Department of Electronics & communication Engineering, DAVIET, Jalandhar.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. S S Maan highlighted few statistics that out of 450 million blind people of the  world, one third are in India and are  suffering from corneal blindness. The donors are quite less in our country only 25thousand people are treated every year (through donors), rest are still waiting to get the donors. He narrated that Eyes are one of the most important sensory organs in the human body because it renders vision and the power to see. Eye donation is one of the noble act after blood donation he added. Donated eyes can be used to restore vision in people who are suffering from corneal blindness. The front, clear and transparent tissue of the eye called as cornea can be used to restore vision in a corneal blind person. The other portions of the eye are also used for research and training purposes to develop cures for some of the common eye diseases. From each pair of donated eyes, two blind people will get vision and light in to their life, thus making it more divine he added. The Civil Hospital Jalandhar will be the 1st of its kind to have the corneal transplant facility in the region, he stressed.

There are wide spread social awareness programs and activities conducted across the country to highlight the significance of eye donation and its usefulness to the visually impaired people. The Principal Dr. Manoj Kumar was the front runner in the list of eye donors from DAVIET. The pledge forms were distributed for purpose of donation. The Principal appreciated the efforts of NSS officer Dr. M. K. Kaushik and his team for putting up the good show.
