Research Activities
As our department has evolved over the past few years, we have developed research programs in new and exciting areas and we hope to continue in this direction. The thrusts areas of research in communications and signal processing include: Optical solitons, Wireless Communication, speech, image and video processing, VLSI, information theory, communication networks and OFDM systems. Our close affiliation with a number of research groups such as the Rsoft design group, USA has given us new dimensions for setting up state-of-art research laboratory on soliton transmission in Light wave communication field.
Optical soliton transmission system
(long-distance, high-speed optical transmission)
Our research goal is to realize long distance, large capacity optical transmission by taking advantage of optical nonlinear effects, including optical solitons and nonlinear techniques for generating ultra short optical pulses. The soliton is a wave that exists in nature that can propagate over long distances without any distortion of its waveform.
We have developed several novel soliton transmission techniques, such as the use of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons, loss merged soliton transmission systems and also wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) soliton transmission. By adopting these techniques, we can increase the transmission capacity and upgrade installed terrestrial or submarine cables. In addition, we have shown that the use of the DM soliton improves the power margin and the dispersion tolerance of long distance transmission systems.
Digital Communication through Wireless Channels
Our research goal is to effectively characterize the propagation channel for the design of effective transmitters, receivers and communication protocols. Various optimal diversity combining and adaptive modulation techniques are analyzed for their performance in the multiplicative fading & ISI channel. Various fading mitigating techniques such as OFDM, MIMO, Space-time coding are also being analyzed.
