WELCOME TO APPLIED SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Applied Sciences was established in the year 2001 with the aim of providing a sound theoretical base to the upcoming engineers in the field of basic sciences so that they should be in a position to analyse and tackle tough situations in their professional lives successfully. The Department is located in the Research and Foundation Block of the institute and deals in the domains of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Communication Skills. It serves as a model for latest education in the field of Applied Sciences by promoting technical excellence and a broader understanding of engineering in the wider world. Our goal is to produce “new age engineers” who will not only excel in engineering fields but will also have good managerial skills and the ability to communicate well in diverse situations. An unending desire to excel, adaptability and flexibility are the mantras of success followed by the department. The highly qualified faculty of the department involves the students in various interactive projects thus inculcating the spirit of collaboration in the students. When students are in Applied Sciences Department they are in a well guided and liberal environment where they not only come to know about their strengths and weaknesses but also get a chance to interact with renowned scholars who are invited for guest lectures to keep the students abreast of the latest technical developments.
Our department tries to make the students of science and technology aware of the diverse issues affecting man and society. The teaching methods followed by the department emphasise the discursive mode and interpersonal contact between faculty and students. Through our well equipped Physics and Chemistry labs we provide a rare mix of competence in both theoretical aspects of engineering and applied working knowledge of its practical aspects. We believe that “money and skills no longer know borders” and thus we train students for varied situations in a Digital Language Laboratory through the latest software to enhance their communication skills. We provide a common platform for faculty and students whose interests and ideas create a unique environment for innovation and discovery. An intellectual atmosphere prevails in the department which is built upon our interdisciplinary strengths which results in opening up new research areas for teachers, students and research scholars. The faculty members are not only highly qualified and committed to academic activities but are also involved in research for their personal growth and development. Following the footsteps of Dr. S.C. Ahuja and Dr. Sarika Mehta two more members of the faculty, Ms. Sapna Sethi and Mr. Narinder Sharma are pursuing their Ph.Ds from N.I.T Jalandhar and G.N.D.U Amritsar respectively. Many of the faculty members have presented their papers in national and international conferences while others have various publications to their credit. Thus they keep themselves abreast with the latest technical knowledge and continuously strive to improve their intellectual levels so that they can equip the students with the latest know how, improve their competitiveness and enhance their versatility. Irrespective of their individual areas of expertise, the departmental faculty is committed towards meeting the latest intellectual challenges and extending the mental horizon of the students. Our each and every student is competent enough to handle the complex challenges that lie at the interfaces of science, technology, and society, thus contributing to the overall intellectual and social wealth of the society and taking the country forward on the path of success and glory.
DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY
In modern age there has been proliferation of information and a veritable explosion of knowledge in diverse fields of human endeavour. That is why there is an urgent need to determine which information we need, from where to obtain it and how to select, evaluate and utilize it. In order to meet this need, in addition to the main library, a Departmental Library has also been set up which has books covering diverse areas. Since it is an interdisciplinary department, the faculty members who are involved in continuous research activities need access to books related to their respective areas. With the access to this latest knowledge they can enhance their own skills, can guide the students well and can shape them into successful professionals. The goal of having such a library is not simply to broaden the knowledge base of science education, research and practice but also to build an integrated enterprise that will persist and be valuable to learners and teachers of all ages.
